The Enoch Pratt Free Library began on January 21, 1882 when long-time local hardware merchant, banking and steamship company executive and philanthropist Enoch Pratt, (1808-1896), offered a gift of a central library, four branch libraries and a financial endowment of more than $1 million. His intention was to establish a public circulating library that (as he described it): "shall be for all, rich and poor without distinction of race or color, who, when properly accredited, can take out the books if they will handle them carefully and return them."

The current central Branch of the Library was built in 1933 at a cost of $3MM and in Spring of 2016, ground was broken on a $115 million restoration of the historic library.  Ayers Saint Gross (ASG) a local architect firm helped to expand the Pratt’s mission through renovations and expansion of the Central Library over several phases, from the 1980s to the present renovation
