Morning Session:
Intuitive Innovation: An Introduction to Design Thinking

Design is not just a verb – it is a way of thinking. In this interactive session, Kellogg School of Management Professor Liz Gerber will highlight some of the fundamentals of Design Thinking and discuss how they can be applied to everything from products and services to business models. We’ll explore how we can apply these principles across a variety of industries, in small companies and large enterprises alike.  You don’t need a background in design or engineering to benefit from this session – you just need a bit of curiosity and a desire to view the world through a more human-centered lens.

Liz Gerber, Director, Design Research Council; Executive Committee, Design Research Council; Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence; Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Founder, Design for America Northwestern University. To sustain and enhance innovation in our country, we need leaders who can routinely innovate solutions to complex, ill-defined problems. Liz Gerber studies and designs social computing systems to support innovation. To see Prof. Liz Gerber's full bio, click her profile image below.

Afternoon Session:
Negotiating with Colleagues: Why It’s Harder to Negotiate Inside the Company

Any time that people cannot achieve their goals without the cooperation of others, they must negotiate.  Negotiating with colleagues is particularly challenging because many ramifications exist.  For example, people may come to the negotiating table with agendas.  In this sense, managers need to think about their own reputation as well as their teams.  Internal negotiation requires skills of collaboration, communication, influence, active listening, idea generation, and problem-solving.

This dynamic, interactive “negotiating with colleagues” seminar focuses on:  (1) How leaders and managers can create value when negotiating with colleagues; (2) How to build (and re-build) trust; (3) How to do this in a way that creates efficiencies and innovation.
Each course participant will have an opportunity to “audit” their negotiation skills and receive quantitative and qualitative feedback for improving their ability to negotiate in decentralized organizations. The goal is to improve negotiation skills among equal-status colleagues as well as negotiating with superiors and subordinates.

Leigh Thompson is the J. Jay Gerber Professor of Dispute Resolution & Organizations in the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She is the director of the Kellogg Team and Group Research Center, the Kellogg Leading High Impact Teams Executive program, High Performance Negotiation Skills Executive program, and co-director of the Constructive Collaboration Executive program and the Navigating Work Place Conflict Executive program.
