Overview:

In 2012, GE Transportation, a subsidiary of General Electric (NYSE: GE), opened its locomotive plant in north Fort Worth, near the Texas Motor Speedway, and now produces an average of 1.2 locomotives per day. The plant employs more than 500 people and operates two shifts daily (7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. to 11 p.m.). In a separate building adjacent to the locomotive factory, GE also produces specialized mining equipment.

With just under 1 million square feet of production space, GE’s Fort Worth facility is the equivalent of five Wal-Mart Supercenters under one roof. The plant is comprised of 30 work stations, and it takes approximately five weeks to assemble a locomotive.  Each locomotive is held together with an astonishing 16,000 pounds of weld wire.

GE Transportation is the maker of the Evolution® Series locomotive which reduces fuel usage by 5 percent or approximately 640,000 gallons over the lifetime of the locomotive, while reducing emissions by approximately 40 percent.  The Evolution Series locomotive is one of GE's most prominent "ecomagination" products. Currently, approximately 17,000 GE locomotives are in use in more than 50 countries around the world, including more than 4,100 Evolution Series locomotives.

Interesting Facts:

·         1 million Square Feet of production space

·         The Evolution series locomotive is so powerful that one 12-cylinder locomotive can pull the equivalent of 170 Boeing 747 jetliners.
