Dinner Presentation: Friends of Waterfront Seattle

Friends_waterfront_Seattle.jpgThe rebuilt Elliott Bay seawall is underway and is the first step to reconnect our city to its central shoreline with a 26-block park from Pioneer Square to Belltown. The park features a 9-acre central public space, a landscaped Overlook Walk connecting the expanded Pike Place Market and Seattle Aquarium, spaces for new cultural and recreational activities, among many other amenities.  Designed by James Corner Field Operations, with over six years of public input, the new park will be an icon of sustainability and Seattle’s identity as a waterfront city.

On November 17, Heidi Hughes, Executive Director of Friends of Waterfront Seattle, will present the waterfront park project, its design, the history of its making and the strategic plan that guides its trajectory, and the economic impact it will have on the city, which is already occurring.

Heidi Hughes has pursued her passion for people, places and ideas in the diverse worlds of public television, law, government, public policy, and real estate development. Heidi joined the Friends after serving as the Economic Development Policy Advisor to Governor Gregoire. Prior to moving to Seattle from Florida for the weather, Heidi was engaged in real estate development with a public company where she ran a statewide land acquisition program and advised on large scale mixed use developments. Heidi has also held several senior level positions in Florida state government, where she was involved in economic development, land use, transportation and environmental issues. Her work in the Florida Governor’s office included a major economic development initiative that was the catalyst for creation of a life sciences/biotech cluster. Her public service was preceded by private law practice and a stint producing documentaries for a public affairs series airing on public television.

Friends of Waterfront Seattle is the nonprofit created pursuant to the City’s strategic plan for the waterfront project. Friends partners with the City on realizing the vision for the future waterfront park fully and well; the organization: builds awareness; will raise $100M in capital funding for park construction; and will partner with the City on the park’s long-term stewardship.
