Dinner Presentation: Captain Keith Colburn

Keith-(1).jpgCaptain Keith Colburn is known to millions of television viewers as the captain of the Wizard on the hit television show, Deadliest Catch. Captain Keith is the very definition of the American success story. In 1985, Keith flew to Alaska with a one-way ticket, a backpack, and $50. Having no contacts or even the internet to research job opportunities, Keith took a gamble that his thirst for adventure and strong work ethic would be enough to land him a fishing job. Today, 30 years later, Keith is not only one of the Bering Sea’s most successful crabbers, but has become a formidable business icon outside of his success in the commercial fishing industry.

Keith’s passion for people and his business are the underlying themes throughout his speaking engagements. He shares advice on being successful in today’s hyper-competitive business environment by providing parallels between his life as a captain and day to day business operations in a high stress industry. Keith engages audiences by explaining how he manages high risk situations with instinctual and tactical decision making that saves lives. He walks the audience through his thought process, giving them practical tips for making any business decision with confidence.

Keith takes pride in being a pro; and because of his 30+ years of experience in the fishing industry, he knows the importance of understanding all aspects of the business. He started out as a greenhorn, cleaning Wizard-with-ice-cover-(1).jpgout the bilge, and worked his way up to the bridge to eventually owning one of the premier crab vessels in the Bering Sea.  Now he is part of an international television show watched by millions around the world. This experience taught Keith how vital each role is to the success of his business.  Keith’s attention to detail on mitigating risk through proper equipment, training, and safety procedures have resulted in no major injuries occurring under his command. When he pulls the Wizard back into town, he gauges his success on the following three principles.

1. Is everyone okay?
2. Did we catch any crab?
3. How is the boat?

As safety being Keith’s number one priority, he has been involved in many organizations who make it their mission to promote safety at sea.

As a member of the American Fishermen’s Safety Association, Keith partnered with the United States Coast Guard as the spokesperson for the Coast Guard’s Boat Responsibly safety initiative, promoting safety on national waterways. He also managed the Vessel Safety and Insurance Management for the Industrial Bering Sea and Northwest Crabbers Trawlers and Long Liners.  Keith is currently a member of the North Pacific Fishing Vessel Owner’s Association which teaches vessel safety education to mariners.  He has served on the Board of Directors for the Fishermen’s Memorial; a non-profit organization that promotes safety at sea and provides scholarships to children who lost family members at sea.

Keith’s intellect, wit, and charisma make him a truly engaging public speaker. He loves motivating others and helping people achieve their personal and professional goals.
