Nick Avakian

Nick joined the firm in 2005 and leads the firm’s West region credits, incentives and methods practice. He has experience working within a broad spectrum of industries, including apparel, aerospace and defense, architecture and engineering, automotive and transportation, chemical, food and beverage, electronics, lighting, masonry, medical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, power sports, semiconductor, software and water treatment. In addition, he serves all types of clients, including public, private, multinational, private equity–owned and venture capital–funded companies. In his time at RSM, Nick has reduced the tax liability of his clients by over $1 Billion.


Prior to RSM, Nick focused on performing research and development tax credit studies at a Big Four accounting firm and was previously a systems analyst, network administrator, database specialist and information technology project manager. As such, he has been designated a firmwide national tax subject matter expert for internal-use software research and development studies.


In addition to the research and development tax credit, Nick is responsible for all fieldwork, calculations and reporting related to energy credits, tangible property services and accounting methods in the firm’s West region. Nick also manages Internal Revenue Service and state examination defense, strategy formulation and witness preparation.
