Michael Monahan

Michael Monahan is an Assistant Managing Principal for People & Culture in the New York / New England Market Territory at Grant Thornton and serves as the Principal-in-Charge for the New York / New England Market Territory Compensation and Benefits Consulting Practice

In addition to his technical expertise and leadership role in the Market Territory as an Assistant Managing Principal, Mike has experience providing advice, guidance and support to clients, whether individuals, estates, foundations, for-profit (public or private) companies or not-for-profit (higher education, health care and many others) varying in size and value and across the United States. Mike is an attorney duly admitted to practice in the Courts of the State of New York and to the United States Supreme Court. Mike has more than 25 years’ experience as a strategic business adviser, general counsel, labor counsel, human resources executive and business leader. Mike’s unique specialties include providing guidance related to issues including but not limited to assessing and developing effective and compliant compensation programs; evaluating the reasonableness of compensation; managing due diligence assessments and human capital integration and synergy achievement; developing effective long-term equity-based incentive programs; assessing, developing and implementing effective employee benefit program designs and administration practices; complying with SEC, IRS, DOL, etc… disclosure requirements; valuing stock options; assessing appropriateness of phantom share program designs; designing overall company compensation philosophies; advising Boards on overall compensation design issues; wealth accumulation analyses; and developing effective succession planning practices in the competitive public company and/or private family business arenas.

Mike's experience spans a variety of industries including but not limited to wholesale, retail, manufacturing, energy, healthcare (not-for-profit and for-profit), higher education, social services, religious, hospitality, entertainment, and includes companies and individuals across the United States varying in size and net worth from $5M to $30B+
Mike has been a featured speaker at various conferences and seminars across the United States on a broad array of human capital strategy issues and initiatives and as a featured panelist discussing estate planning techniques or issues for more than 20 years.
