Maura Hughes was the first in her family to graduate college and the first to get an MBA. She has been working at Medflight Boston for nearly 24 years, becoming CEO in 2017. Her first experience with the nonprofit was even earlier than that, as an auditor when she worked in public accounting in the early 1990s. The organization has grown from one or two helicopters at the time she conducted the audit to five helicopters, eight critical-care ground ambulances, and an airplane today. Last year, Boston Medflight's busiest yet, they transported more than 5,600 patients. That’s more than 15 critically ill or injured patients to the hospitals best suited to treat them every single day.
