Canada forced labor act in effect
Canada recently enacted the Fighting Against Forced Labour and Child Labour in Supply Chains Act. The act requires certain government institutions and private-sector entities to report on the measures they take to prevent and reduce the risk of forced or child labor, both by the institutions themselves and in their supply chains. Reports are due on May 31, 2024.

U.K. CBAM coming by 2027
Following the EU’s new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the United Kingdom (U.K.) has pledged to implement its own carbon import levy on some products by 2027. The CBAM aims to help protect businesses against cheaper imports from countries with less strict climate policies and will apply to carbon-intensive products in the iron, steel, aluminum, fertilizer, hydrogen, ceramics, glass, and cement sectors.

Provisional deal achieved on CSDDD
The European Council and European Parliament reached a provisional deal in December 2023 on the corporate sustainability due diligence directive (CSDDD). This directive is designed to enhance the protection of the environment and human rights, both in the EU and globally, by setting obligations for large companies that apply to their own operations, plus those of their subsidiaries and business partners.

Staying up to date on California ESG-related legislation
California recently passed a variety of ESG-related bills that might affect many businesses. A carbon offset bill mandates reporting if companies market, sell, or purchase voluntary carbon offsets in California, while the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act and the Greenhouse Gases: Climate-Related Financial Risk Act require new corporate emissions and climate risk reporting. SB 54, the new diversity reporting law, requires venture capital companies to report certain demographic information.
