Program Description
We will be welcoming Angela Hoon, Executive Director, Strategic Risk Management, and Gustavo Vello, Assistant Treasurer, Treasury, Investor Relations & Special Projects from General Motors Company
as our dinner meeting speaker. They will be discussing "Strategic Risk Management at GM: Changing the Risk Paradigm".
Angela Hoon joined General Motors as Executive Director, Strategic Risk Management, in May 2015. Hoon leads GM’s Global Strategic Risk Management program, and is responsible for improving risk governance and culture by driving a “risk” thought process into strategic and cross-functional decision making. She has championed a standardized, global approach that is practical and relevant across all layers of the business, and includes early identification of risks and analyses of their interdependencies. Hoon provides regular updates to the Executive Leadership Team, and the Risk Committee of the GM Board of Directors.
Prior to joining GM, Hoon was a principal in the risk consulting practice for KPMG USA. During her tenure there she was one of the national partners focused on the implementation of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) across industries. She is a recognized leader with over 20 years of experience in ERM and GRC services.
Hoon started her career at KPMG South Africa where she performed external audit services in the manufacturing sector. She holds bachelor’s degrees in commerce and accounting from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. In addition she is a Chartered Accountant, a Certified Internal Auditor and has a Certification in Risk Management Assurance.
Gustavo Vello was appointed Assistant Treasurer of General Motors in July 2017 following a short assignment as Special Projects Director in Detroit. He had previously served as Chief Financial Officer of General Motors do Brazil from September 2015 to March 2017 and CFO of General Motors Colombia in the two previous years.
Gustavo was born in Vitoria, Brazil in January 1973. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Universidade Federal do Espirito Santo in Brazil in 1994, and his Master of Business Administration from Duke University in the United States in 1999.
In May 1999, Gustavo joined General Motors do Brasil’s Treasury department and, in March 2003, was transferred to GM´s New York Treasurer´s Office, where he held several positions. In June 2007, Gustavo was appointed Manager of GM´s Asia Pacific Regional Treasury Center in Shanghai, China where he stayed for 2 years.
Gustavo returned to New York in June 2009 where he had several assignments related to GM´s restructuring and IPO. In August 2010, Gustavo was appointed Director of Global Funding and Cash Management, leading the execution of GM´s $5B global credit line and several other Capital Market transactions.
Gustavo Vello is married to Renata and has two daughters, Julia and Amanda. He speaks Portuguese, English and Spanish.
