8:30 - 9:00 a.m. - Networking

Hot Topic Learning Objectives:
  • Amidst high inflation and low unemployment, the market is now engaged in its fifth Fed rate hiking cycle of the last 30 years
  • History offers few lessons as markets digest the unprecedented and rapidly changing macroeconomic environment
    • Delayed and unprecedented fiscal and monetary policy unwind, inflation at multi-decade highs, and heightened geopolitical risk may limit comparability
    • The secular trend of lower long-term interest rates over the last 30 years makes predicting potential outcomes even more challenging
    • The global recovery, which has been characterized by low levels of unemployment, constrained supplies of goods and labor and recent record highs of inflation has developed market central banks on path to seemingly synchronized paths of rate normalization
  • Frequent changes in interest rate forecasts and constantly changing expectations for the Fed’s terminal rate has resulted in renewed interest in risk mitigation strategies by corporate clients, while IBOR sun-setting and approaching USD LIBOR cessation has required adjustments to loan and interest rate hedge agreements
  • Similarly, the divergence in performance of major economies and interest rates, as well as escalated geopolitical risks, has caused exchange rates to trade at historic levels, exposing some companies to losses while creating opportunities for others.
