Maintaining a current and complete LinkedIn profile is critical for everyone – but especially for those considering a job search. As you grow professionally, so should your profile. If it’s been a while since you last updated your LinkedIn profile, here are some things to do right now:

  • Headshot: Update with a good quality image that accurately depicts you today, not 10 years ago. This is important as you receive virtual introductions with a link to your profile, attend video meetings and interviews etc.

  • About: Write about yourself, not your company. Sure, you can mention your company topline, but don’t make the About section all about them. This is valuable real estate to tell your professional story and show your unique value (and get viewers to click “see more”).

  • Experience: Be sure to match current and past employers with their LinkedIn company pages so that corporate logos appear instead of those generic gray squares. Sometimes a gray square in unavoidable (like if a company no longer exists), but in general, your experience looks more credible when people see logos and can click through to a company page.

  • Volunteer experience: Don’t skip this section because you don’t think it’s as relevant as direct work experience. Volunteer leadership roles often highlight skills expertise and experience that your work history does not. Think about what you’ve done with professional associations (like FEI!), alumni groups, nonprofits and mentoring programs, and include brief, targeted summaries.
