Let's Put the "Health" Back in Healthcare - But How?

This event will be preceded by an optional afternoon CPE session entitled "Corporate Benefits Update: The Healthcare System is Stacked Against Employers...What's a CFO to Do?" (4:30 PM - 5:30 PM) - Register separately by clicking here.

Health care was the top issue for voters during the November congressional midterm elections, with 71% indicating it was “very important” (based on a Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation poll). Much of the recent focus related to health care has focused on the problems of inadequate access, increasing costs, and pre-existing conditions. However, the most serious shortcoming -- that the national’s healthcare system is not designed to maximize health and the concept of “health care as if health mattered” – has largely been overshadowed. The panel will focus on this issue, with the following specifics topics to be covered:

  • Volume to Value Transformation. Accountable care emphasizes achievement of health outcomes for the individual and for the population and reducing the growth of healthcare costs. Where are we in this transformation and what will accountable care look like in the future
  • Care from a Patient’s Perspective. According to a PwC study, almost 50% of healthcare provider executives said that revamping patient experience is one of their top three priorities over the next five years, with many having established or building the role of chief patient officer. In a few organizations, this position reports directly to the CEO. Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are required to have a patient on the Governing Board. The panel will discuss how a health system may become more patient-centered.
  • Science and Technology in Medicine. Genome and gene editing, cybernetics, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence promise to change, even disrupt medical practice and offer unprecedented longevity and quality of life.
  • New Health Science University and a Medical School in the Bay Area. To respond to tectonic shifts in science and technology, society's expectations for accountable care, and the daunting challenges to improve the quality of healthcare and reduce or constrain costs, a proposed health science university in the Bay Area will address these issues and changing paradigms.

The distinguished panel includes:
  • Vipul Mankad, M.D., President and Founding Dean, Global Health Science University. Dr. Mankad is a nationally known academic physician leader with a distinguished track record of NIH funded research, 150+ publications, and four books.
  • Venu Kondle, M.D., Founding Chairman, Board of Trustees, Global Health Science University. Dr. Kondle also serves as  Founder and CEO of the California Accountable Care Organization, and Medical Director for the  Yuba City Hemodialysis Center, Grass Valley Peritoneal Dialysis Center, Marysville Hemodialysis Center, Marysville Peritoneal Dialysis Center, Colusa Indian Hemodialysis Center, and the North Valley Nephrology Research Center.
  • Yaron Friedman, M.D., Chief of Staff, John Muir Health – Walnut Creek Medical Center
  • Stephen P. Maron, M.D., President, VEP Healthcare, Inc., a provider of emergency medicine and hospitalist management services in more than 30 hospitals nationwide.
