DR. SNAITH'S PRESENTATION WILL BE PRECEDED BY AN OPTIONAL AFTERNOON CPE SESSION
(SEE DETAILS BELOW)

The FEI Tampa Bay Chapter's Program Committee is proud to once again present Dr. Sean Snaith for our annual Economic Update.  Dr. Snaith makes frequent media appearances and his views have been featured by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, CNBC and Fox Business Journal.

Renowned for his engaging speaking presentations, one business editor wrote, "Snaith has an uncanny knack of making economics not only understandable but interesting."  This is one of FEI Tampa Bay's most popular events and one you won't want to miss.

With passage of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act, the stage is set for an acceleration of economic growth in 2018.  The Tax law is not the only factor that will help drive GDP growth higher. The labor market continues to tighten and 2018 will see a long-awaited acceleration in wage and salary growth and the addition of a rebalancing of regulation to the policy mix will only help catalyze growth.  This presentation will look back at the first year of the Trump Administration and forward to what upcoming years may bring and what it all means for the U.S. and Florida economies.

Attendees will learn about the impact of policies already implemented and the potential impacts of those yet to come.  The outlook for monetary policy actions by the Federal Reserve in the wake of tax reform and faster economic growth will also be discussed. An outlook for the U.S. and Florida economies will be presented covering the labor market, financial markets, cryptocurrency, housing and more!

AFTERNOON PD SESSION:  SALES AND USE TAX - THE STATES STRIKE BACK

Technology has changed the way the world conducts business, making it easier than ever to market and sell products and services throughout the United States and the world.  Sales tax used to be based upon the transfer of tangible personal property.  States started the attack with taxation of services where there was not transfer of tangible property, but new technology such as Software as a Service, Digital Goods, Electronic Downloaded Software, and Electronic Services have turned the sales and use tax world upside down.  Gone are the clean definitions of Tangible Personal Property and Physical Presence, replaced with the nebulous terms Click-Through, Affiliate, and Economic Nexus.  The states have even begun to impose administrative requirements on companies that they cannot legally force to collect sales tax, and the penalties for non-compliance are severe.

During this presentation we will discuss the evolution of sales and use tax in the digital age, including discussion of SaaS, Digital Goods, and electronic services and how the states are treating these new technologies.  We will also discuss the history of sales tax collection requirements, state attacks on these requirements, current legislative efforts to change sales tax requirements, and current litigation associated with the most extreme new sales tax statutes, rules and regulations.  We will discuss the states push into customer notification requirements and responsibilities of companies to report information to the various states.  We will discuss your requirements to remain in compliance with the ever changing landscape and will wrap up with a discussion of where we are headed in the future.
