Tell us a little bit about your career, educational/professional background and how you got to where you are today.
Like most in the insurance industry, I backed into the profession. I graduated with a degree in criminology and interned at the State of Florida Insurance Fraud Division. I was recruited by insurance firms and landed a job at an insurance company. I learned the insurance business by handling claims and eventually became a broker. Having the insurance company experience (claims, underwriting) provides me with technical expertise many don’t have.
Do you think it takes a certain kind of personality to thrive in your field? What traits are most important?
It does – you must be an active listener, read body language, have thick skin, and most importantly be persistent!
