Professor Joel Owens, PhD, CPA, is Assistant Professor of Accounting, and has been on the Portland State University faculty since 2018. He earned his PhD in accounting from the University of South Carolina in 2015 and previously served on the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He currently teaches financial statement auditing and integrated accounting issues (the accounting capstone course), covering topics including consolidation accounting, financial statement analysis, forecasting, business valuation, and professional ethics. His research focus lies at the intersection of accounting and human judgment and decision-making and has been published in the Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management Accounting Research, and Journal of Information Systems. Professor Owens has been a licensed CPA in South Carolina since 2010 and in Oregon since 2018. He is a frequently invited speaker for both academic and practitioner audiences.
