CCR Update: January 2016

Meetings: CCR met with the SEC Staff, James Schnurr, Chief Accountant, Brian Croteau, Deputy Chief Accountant, and Wesley R. Bricker, Deputy Chief Accountant, along with FASB Vice Chair James Kroeker, and with PCAOB Board Member Jay Hanson, PCAOB Staff Keith Wilson, Greg Scates and Steve Kroll, in Maryland for its December CCR meeting. The next meeting will take place in March in Coronado, CA.Committee Activities and Updates:On November 16 in collaboration with EY and at the direction of CCR, FERF launched its final report on Disclosure Effectiveness, titled “Disclosure Effectiveness: Companies embrace the call to action.” This report highlights the voluntary actions companies are taking to improve disclosure in financial reports and provides insights and advice on starting the improvement process. The report received significant attention at the CFRI conference and in subsequent AICPA conferences and other meetings. FERF is expected to issue a second report in 2016 highlighting best practices and providing more concrete examples and statistics.On November 16 representative of CCR met with SEC Commissioner Piwowar to discuss the topic of Disclosure Effectiveness and Internal Control over Financial Reporting. The discussion went well, and Piwowar was very open and interested in hearing from CCR. He expressed his desire to continue the dialog on the issues going forward. During this meeting we presented him with a copy of the Disclosure Effectiveness report and he commented that he was this is the hands of everyone at the SEC.On December 10 CCR submitted a comment letter on two FASB proposals addressing the application of materiality to disclosures. CCR is in support of the proposals but sees the issue of “Disclosure effectiveness” as a much broader issue that needs attention from all regulators.In an effort to provide content from our quarterly CCR meetings to the broader FEI membership, FEI initiated a publication titled, What We Learned, highlighting key findings from our CCR meetings and made the article available to members only through FEIconnect. FEI launched the first article in October highlighting the September meeting and launched the second article on December 18 highlighting the December CCR meetings. In addition, on December 10 FEI launched a combined “What We Learned” webcast, along with CFIT, highlighting key findings from both CCR and CFIT December...
