Health Insurance Lessons from the California Wildfires
The recent California wildfires tragically resulted in loss of life and property. Questions have arisen about regulations impeding wildfire risk mitigation, the retreat of insurance markets, and the adequacy of public insurance funding. In the aftermath, employers offering health benefits can learn lessons about catastrophic claims, risk mitigation, and the impact of public insurance on private markets.
We will discuss what employers must do to maintain affordable health benefits employers by:
-
Understanding how catastrophic health claim risk and prevalence has increased, and uncovering the four sources of catastrophic claims.
-
Taking steps to protect the plan value for the 98% of the people who do not have a catastrophic claim in a plan year, without breaking the bank.
-
Exploring which approaches don’t provide material payback.
-
Demonstrating that meeting your fiduciary responsibility can align with making sound business decisions.
