Fort Worth Chapter February 2019 Dinner Meeting

An Effective Response – Smoldering Crisis and Capacity Cost Management

Dr. Charles R. (Chuck) Thomas served 26 years with Southwest Airlines before being recruited by the world’s oldest and most prestigious hospitality school, Ècole hôtelière de Lausanne, to lead its Executive MBA Program and serve as Department of Accounting Chair.

Dr. Thomas will lead an informative session based on his enterprise risk management work with Southwest, presenting a case study on how the firm responded to the smoldering crisis of loss or profitability in its short-haul markets over the period from the early 1990s to mid-2000s.

Participants will learn about:

·         The use of cost drivers in addressing a smoldering crisis while trying not to trigger an acute crisis.

·         How Southwest emphasized executional strategic adjustments that allowed it to maintain profitability as it transitioned to new operating conditions.
